Chaoborus punctipennis vs. C.americanus

Chaoborus p.

Chaoborus a.

Chaoborus also called glass worms are found in lakes and ponds throughout the world. Chaoborus relies mostly on its mandibles for feeding. The mandibles, which are generally paired, trap and shred prey as they are captured and pushed back through the digestive system (Weddman and Richter 2007). Mandibles vary in size based on species 2007).Chaoborus punctipennis is the smallest and most widespread Chaoborus species in North America. They exhibit DVM (Diel Vertical Migration) They can live alone or coexist with other different species.Chaoborus americanus does not exhibit DVM (Diel Vertical Migration). They live almost exclusively in fishless ponds. They are much larger and more pigmented than Chaoborus punctipennis.
