Red-tailed Hawks

The most common hawk in North America is the Red-tailed Hawk. They are large, sharp-taloned birds that can get very aggressive when defending their nests and territory.  They live in basically any environment including deserts, grasslands, fields, woods, and tropical rainforests.

Their diet consists of mammals such as mice, rabbits and squirrels. They also feed on other birds and snakes. Their prey can weigh anywhere from less then an ounce to 5lbs.

FUN FACTS:
> Mated pairs stay together until one of them dies
> They have a raspy scream that sounds like a raptor.  So in hollywood movies when a hawk or eagle appears on screen, no matter what species, the call is almost always a Red-tailed Hawk
> The oldest know Red-tailed Hawk was 28 years and 10 months old
> Have been seen hunting in pairs by guarding opposite sides of the same tree
