An Acorn Where?

Walking around the dunes at Lake Michigan I encountered something that was a little shocking for me... an acorn in the sand.

An acorn... in a dune! Saugatuck, MI.

Usually, sand is associated with deserts or beaches, not necessarily with Oak Trees. The story is a little different at Saugatuck, where succession is happening at real time, going from a sandy beach to a dense forest in just a few dozen meters.

Blowout in a dune looking at Lake Michigan. This is where the acorn was found!

The dunes support a great variety of species of both plants and animals at the different stages of succession, varying from moss grasses near the beach to deer at the inner part of the dune!

Deer feeding near the blowout.
