This funny looking thing is called squaw root and can be found under the Orobanchaceae family. Squaw root is a parasitic plant that contains no chlorophyll and therefore does not photosynthesis and relies almost completely on it's host plant for nutrients. Squaw root feeds exclusively on oak trees and does not aim to kill the plant...just simply mooch.
